The Recording

A pleasant and undemanding dog is sat before a sound-recording. One of the family with whom the dog gets on well, has been called away. This owner's voice comes out of the recording-device and straight-way the dog trembles and barks with doggy excitement.

Two years pass. Every Saturday, over the two years, the missing owner's voice is played once again to the dog. An odd thing happens; a thing which the rest of the family do not expect: after a time the dog seems to lose a degree of interest in the voice coming out of the recording-device. It's tail stirs only briefly. After another time, the tail ceases to move altogether; the barks no longer; it lays its head on its front paws and stares at nothing in particular.

At the end of the two years the missing owner returns and the dog, though it recognizes the owner still, has lost all interest in the person.
