Hypothetical and yet. If you are the only one with a pistol and you are there when a couple of working-class attack a stranger for no just reason (perhaps a man of the 'wrong' colour; perhaps an academic) you know that just one blow can kill if the victim is unlucky and you have no way of stopping them other than to shoot - will you pull the trigger? Your firearm trumps bare knuckles and a knife. And further - what if the thugs are family?
Or what if they're middle-class Republicans attacking a Democrat? Nothing trumps what is right surely? And there is no other way. Your answer of course reveals something about you.
